Why (the Site of) Drawing Matters...to me.

Kiera O’Toole is an independent visual artist and practice-based researcher from Sligo, Ireland.  O’Toole’s practice-based research utilises the philosophy of phenomenology to examine how drawing can record the expressive qualities and ‘emotional vibrations’ of an atmosphere.

By paying close attention to a sites atmosphere, my practice attempts to create a
‘holding space’ where we can pay attention to how humans experience in the here and now, which is always and already happening.

My practice uses the theory of ‘atmospheres’ which is understood as how one feels in everyday ‘lived space’ as more meaningful account of ‘background’ / ‘environment’ within in-situ and site-responsive drawing processes.

O’Toole is also co-founder of Drawing deCentered which is artist-led collective that explores contemporary drawing practice in Ireland.
